The Nodes and I

I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago, and I hadn’t been looking forward to it. Being a Moon-Saturn type, I felt like it would just show up my (imagined) lack of achievement with my life.

In fact it has had the opposite effect. I’m feeling thank god all that achievement business is out of the way, it was just a youthful fantasy that I am no longer subject to, and I was never very good at it anyway. I’m free just to get on with my life now. It was quite remarkable how the new feeling began on my actual birthday, and has seemed to take root since then. Maybe when I am 60 I’ll be able to stop pretending I'm a responsible adult?

Natally I have a tight Neptune-North Node conjunction in Scorpio. This aspect has all sorts of stuff to do with karma and destiny and why I’m here on the planet. Being very watery, it doesn’t fit well with the rest of my chart, which provides an interesting challenge. How does an airy-fiery person become watery? It means that when you eventually do, it is well-integrated with some of the other elements.

It also means that I am very sensitive to Neptune-North Node conjunctions. Both – aged 16 and 33 – were times when I was having to ponder my direction. This coming one is conjunct my Sun, so it will be very powerful, and it’s happening over the next 2 months. I think it means that at last there will be a coming together of my deepest purpose (Neptune-North Node) with my conscious personality (Sun). It might even be a sort of remembering. "Oh yes, of course, that’s why I’m here."

The Nodes are the points at which the Moon’s path through the sky crosses the Sun’s path. The Sun and the Moon are the two main personal planets, between them they describe most of your personality. So these points of intersection, the Nodes, represent points of integration in which the whole of you is involved. They represent a coming together of who you have been (the Moon) and who you are becoming (the Sun). This is not an easy thing to do, it usually takes a lot of sorting and self-knowledge. But fate also intervenes to lend a hand: the Nodes are associated, for example, with significant encounters with other people that can change your life. Traditionally, Saturn is associated with the South Node, the place of old karma that needs to be shed; and Jupiter is associated with the North Node, the place of new development.

By the way, I’m not an authority on the Nodes, I worked out half of the above as I wrote it, and I rarely mention them in readings. But I think I might pay them a bit more attention.

This is Venus - Your post touched my heart deeply, and what came to mind was the following: Years ago, I was sitting a meditation course. The Buddhist Lama conducting the course gave us interviews by allowing us to take him to dinner. Sitting across from the Lama in a Chinese restaurant, I read aloud the fortune I found in my fortune cookie, "You will soon gain something you have always wanted." And the Lama said to me, "Perhaps what you will gain is your liberation." And I wish you the same.

Cheerful Birthday brilliant friend!
Look how prolific you've become, and we are the beneficiaries, lucky us!
You kept going even when you weren't getting feedback which is a truly noble and adult trait which I greatly admire. And you're going deeper each time I've noticed, lucky us once more!
Having the NN conjuct neptune up there where your career is has little to do, I think with the vague idea of becoming suited adults standing next to the fireplace with a drink in our hand.
That neptune/nn in saturn's position is bringing the ideal into the real/saturn's house and adding depth and reality out of shadow and spiritual/depth/myth in pluto's sign.
It's that loneliness or nakedness one feels on the creative edge that lots of us have the inclination to run home to mommy instead!
The pain of becoming individuated brings treasure to those that follow.
Cheers!

The nodes have been incredible timers in my own life, and even tho the sn is associated with saturn, it has been saturn/nn conjuctions that have brought forth the longest term, bone marrow deep loving, profound connections in my life. Attendant were transits of jupiter and neptune to my sn in saggitarius 5-degrees, nn 5 gemini.
However transiting nn was 5 aquarius.
14 years later, when saturn crossed my south node, both of these treasured soul connections died much to my heartbreak they had gone beyond. Tears still spring forth as the love and gratitude I feel seizes me without notice.
Love is magic that cuts through all concept of time.

Dawa, thanks for your comments, very nice that one on your own Nodes! I make it that my North Node is 3rd House? 12 Feb 58 18.50 London UK?

Heh. Calculated for a.m. not p.m. in errerer.
Still, gawd, look at all those mercury themes, AND pluto/neptune/saturn just the same!
Plus a splay pattern chart like Carl Jung had, which is a lot to coordinate in that it has the signature of an "exponential" style of learning. One experience translates to understanding many more. And, like myself you have a 6th house sun which is tough if one wishes to develop a nice thick ego. The north/south node in their strength in the 3rd/8th are interesting placements, suggest a natural aptitude for Tantra.

you're my inspiraton, DR! keep up the good work, re: letting go of the achievement fantasy, responsible adult stuff, etc.

I don't understand why you feel like you did not reach your achievement fantasy. This astrology blog is by far the best one on the net. I mean that sincerely. I look forwards to reading it and you always blow me away with your insights. Your achievement is to become a great Astrologer, which you are. Thank you for being here!

Thank you anonymous. I won't comment on my relative merits as a blogger! But I think achievement is a mixed word. I mean it in the 'musturbatory' sense, where you feel you have to 'achieve' something concrete and measurable to be a worthwhile human being. Whereas you just may be a good person, and that's all, and somehow that's not enough. I think that 'achievement' needs to be secondary to that, and in our culture it's often the other way round!

I have Uranus in Scorpio conjunct NN in the 9th house, conjunct the Midheaven, as the only watery constellation in my otherwise earthy/airy chart. I always end up saying and doing the most outrageous things around people who activate this constellation by conjunction. In particular, if they're male and it's their Sun or Mars, I really can't help myself. It's pathetic/hilarious... Apparently, too much open-mindedness (which I am then dying to demonstrate) can put people off;)
On the positive side, I'm ambidextrous (worked like a charm the first time I tried writing with a pen in each hand) and have a knack for seeing events in international politics coming; I'm a child of nature sexually and keep loving pretty much like I've never been hurt. Most of the time this is liberating to partners as well, and I feel that this could be an important part of my mission. (Spiller's excellent book on the nodes supports this idea:). Have yet to find The One, though...;)

Happy belated birthday and keep up the good work with your blog! I enjoy your sharp insights:)

Dear Dharmaruci,

Hmmm, i made a post yesterday and it's not here. Oh well-- human thought lost in cyberspace.

Writing now to tell you a way i see your fame expanding. I had this quote on my email tags for a while:

”You are not your spending habits, your emails, your Google searches, your criminal record, your CV, your medical records, your earnings, or your National Insurance Number. In the last analysis, you are what you know to be of worth within you, which the government can never reduce to data nor take away.”
Dharmaruci

I sometimes correspond with Stephanie Azaria of The Cosmic Path, and i assume i wrote to her one time when i had this quote as my tag, because today she has used it as the quote of the day on her site!

These are all such brilliant insights today and have been hungry to define the alienating concept of "credentials". This is happening right now. Yes it is enough to be a good person. A good person as the Hopi's say, the highest state to aspire to is to be "A real human being".
It equates to the state of being in buddhism, the middlemost of 5 main realms of acting and being that flavors a person's inner life and outer expression. That is the "human realm" where you don't quite escape being incredulous and a bit hapless. You feel pain without much in the way of filters
(heavens and hells and blind ignorance) and the human condition reaches you and moves you. It's the most "teachable" and open of all the realms.

Anonymous, your comment "love like you've never been hurt" just changed my consciousness....(!)

one other I'd heard was a line in a poem which says, "love is not a burden, my dear". (his nn was in scorpio as well, so I think we're on to something here).

It takes fearlessness of the most disarming kind. Thank you all for your input.

Perhaps I am your American counterpart - chartwise, anyway - Very similar, especially w/the same nodes. 2/9/57 Weisbaden W. Germany 6:41 p.m. (My dad was in the U.S. Civil Service). I think I am the only (white) American who thought that Rev Wright was telling the truth, like no one wants to hear it. Do you also have a grand cross in your chart? Great site by the way, which I stumbled onto via Lynn Haye's site.

So you've got Neptune-Node-Chiron-Sun stuff going on as well at the moment, as well as MC. It's a turning point I think. I think it will be for me, but I'm not quite there yet...
