The end of the world is coming… it’s a sure thing. Certainly within 100 years, you will no longer be able to read this, because you will be dead and gone. It is quite a worrisome thing of course, but humans have a wonderful ability to forget their coming demise, on the surface at least. There are people who like to universalize dying though, so we can all go at once. This idea that the end of the world could come in our lifetime has been considerably facilitated by Christianity, and a whole chapter is devoted to it in Revelations. (more...)

I think it was author Tom Robbins who pointed out that Christianity invented linear time itself, with the concepts of The Fall, The Redemption, and The Second Coming. The Mayans were operating on circular time, not linear time, as they were living in reality. There is no reason to think the end of a Great Cycle means the end of the world, unless your mind was shaped by Christian culture.
Wow, Adrian's post is pretty fascinating, although the astrology of the consultation chart is way beyond my scope. Kind of mind-boggling, really. He must be quite an astrologer.
I like the idea that people with impending transitions in their personal lives might find the thought of an apocalypse comforting and therefore compelling.
