This guy is so full of shit it is almost comical. This man complains and puts down but offers NO alternative solutions of any kind. No wonder the person who uploaded this video turned off the comments.
I have been working at the psych ward at a local hospital and have seen first hand how serious and life threatening mental illness is. I have seen many people come in with schizophrenia who are absolutely terrified. What they see and experience is completely real to them. For example, recently we had a patient who was convinced that a person named "Sara" was keeping her family hostage in the third floor of the building "because I can hear them" and that "men with night vision goggles were coming in at night" to spy on her. After her medication was changed by one of our evil Psychiatrists, her demons subsided and she told me she felt better.
I have seen countless people coming in with depression so severe that they either attempted or where thinking about committing suicide. One man, married with children, told me he was desperate for help because his drive to kill himself was so strong he didn't know how to stop it. The evil Psychiatrists tried different medications until they found one that turned his depression around and he was able to leave. He was better but not 100% What many people don't realize is that there is no magical pill. However, the changes I have seen from despair to stability are amazing to me. I was skeptical too about medications and mental illness but seeing the results they have when a person is in crisis cannot be denied.
We always tell our patients that it takes a multi-level approach to dealing with mental illness. The first part has to do with reaching out to the medical community which includes: going medical doctor to determine if the cause is due to a medical issue, a good Psychiatrist who handles the meds, and going to Psychologist/Counselor who will work with the cognitive/emotional/behavioral component. On their own people are encouraged to: go to group therapy with people who are in a similar situation, EXERCISE which works as a natural medicine, meditation/prayer which help calm down the mind, journaling, talking to friends, finding a hobby, etc. I NO ONE is forced to take medications.
NO ONE is forced to take medications. NO ONE is locked up permanently. People have the right to say NO.

I don't think he's saying all psychiatry is bad, and I agree it can help and no doubt does a lot of good work. Someone I know was helped by the psychiatric profession this year, but at the same time he felt there was a power issue there. Someone else I know is currently being strapped to his bed against his will in Spain and forcibly medicated on the authority of one relative and to the horror of other relatives. Someone else I know was a consultant psychiatrist who later proved to have serious mental health issues of their own.

And the person I know who has been helped, in their case by medication, has also clearly been 'switched off' by it, and they would agree. And the profession seems to be extending the medication 2 years into the future to cover themselves legally against anything going wrong.

I found this video to be very informative and helpful. Thank you for daring to post it.

There are too many people who want to take a pill to make everything better and too many doctors willing to accommodate them.

There's a time and a place for both natural healing and allopathic medicine. Neither side should ever throw the baby out with the bath water!

Yes, there are people who benefit from genuine caring psychiatrists and psychologists. But there are those in the profession who abuse their position as the authority and ego takes over. It happens in all lines of work.

We have forgotten our basic responsibilities to ourselves and have been trained to rely on outsiders to fix us - which becomes a viscous cycle. Because the connection was broken in the first place, the problem becomes a nasty cycle.

And, in SOME cases, those diagnosed with schizophrenia are misdiagnosed! Too bad the shaman is no longer a mainstay on every corner anymore. Some of these things are very real, but psychiatry has mandated that NONE of it is ever real. Again - the baby with the bath water solution.

Various countries will have different laws to protect the client. In the US, one can not be committed against one's will without due process - court hearings with representation. There are good Psychiatrists and bad, like in any profession. May I suggest taking a look at the Charlie Rose programs on The Brain.(PBS) In particular, the program titled "The Mentally Ill Brain". The panel is excellent and in particular the input from Kay Jamison (has bipolar) and Prof. Elyn Saks from USC(has schizophrenia) - both of these women are active in their own treatment. What we are learning about the Brain is just beginning to revolutionize treatments. One study that Jamison and Saks discuss is one that showed, via MRI, the over all brain enhancement that occurs in psychotherapy when one feels the therapist's empathy and listened to.
